The meeting aims to establish a regional security strategy.

Improving security is a constant task of government. In this vein, Chile has hosted the Second Meeting of Police Directors of Latin America.

It is a key meeting organized by the Interior Ministry with the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB). For two days, it will look to strengthen collaboration and the transfer of learning between the different police institutions, in order to move towards a regional security strategy.

The event was inaugurated by Interior Undersecretary Manuel Monsalve, and attended by police representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. Chile will be represented in the meetings by the general director of Carabineros (Uniformed police service), Ricardo Yáñez, and the general director of the PDI (Investigative police service), Eduardo Cerna.

The meeting will also allow each delegation to share their experiences in the investigation and prosecution of criminal groups. The consultant and international expert in public security policies, Alberto Kopittke, will also present his experience on good police practices in the prevention of crime and organized crime.

This Friday, meanwhile, the senior specialist of the Citizen Security and Justice team of the IADB’s Innovation in Citizen Services Division, Lina Marmolejo, and the senior specialist in Institutional Capacity of the IADB’s Public Sector, Fernando Cafferata, will also speak.

The meeting will conclude when the outcomes are presented by General Director Yáñez and General Director Cerna. Later, the attending delegations will hold a meeting with Interior Minister Carolina Toha, to whom they will present their assessment of the work carried out on both days.
